What is GIS?
It is a computerizes database attached to a computersied map . The map is in the electronic format, where it can be scaled up and down as per specifications and requirements. The database is attached to each referenced location on the map. GIS technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management and development planning.
It is better than a typical map for it is user friendly and easily comprehensible. For instance, from the map itself one can get an idea about the number of women working in an area on how many trees were felled in a forest in the last three years.
Job Profile
What does the work of a GIS professional involve? Well, analysts collect data in the field and hand it over to GIS executives who can scan and digitize them. The job usually begins with fieldwork. The first stage involves drawing a map in accordance with the data. The maps are then scanned and made “intelligent.” Normally, it takes 30to 45 days to scan, digitize the maps and draw them to scale. At time this very mundane job can become a daunting task when data clashes.
It is not always that GIS executives have to draw maps. Maps that are in the Indian Government archives like the Geographic Survey of India can also be digitized. Data attached can be the length of a road , its width, the number of bus stops et al. GIs is not a routine job. In fact it is not meant for those who come into office at 10 in the morning and will not even stay back a minute in the evening
