Research in universities on a decline

Research work in universities show a declining trend although there is an overall increase in such activities, especially by scientific research institutes like the CSIR, Government said on.

Minister of State for Human Resources Development D Purandeswari informed Rajya Sabha that there was an increase in research activities in the country as research work have risen from 17,898 in 2004-05 to 18,730 in 2005-06.
 
But, she said, the number of Ph.Ds from universities are a matter of concern and efforts are on to strengthen linkages between the universities and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
 
"It is true that research efforts in our higher education system has a considerable scope for improvement," she said while noting that steps are being taken to bring research closer to universities.
 
She said the 11th five year plan seeks to carry educational reforms forward through expansion, inclusion and rapid improvement in quality, institutional and policy reforms and enhancing public spending.
 
Other steps include inclusion of greater research component in post graduate programmes, promoting collaborative research among universities, enhancing fellowships, creation of research position and strenghthening of infrastructure.
 
"We need to strengthen research in the country," she said.
 
On tabling of the recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission, she said the report is with the Planning Commission and it cannot be brought before the House immediately.
